Our Mission
ThriftKids mission is to offer support and financial independence for teens and older kids as they age out of foster care and head to college or independent living.
Why teens? When I was 15, I came close to losing my mom. The idea of losing a parent was terrifying to me, yet hundreds of youths in foster care in DC experience parental loss every single day.
ThriftKids is my way of harnessing my anxiety into something positive. My goal is to use my thrifting experience and music connections to make foster care teens lives a little bit easier.
Today, I solicit clothing donations, then sell the clothes online and in real life (at the Georgetown Flea Market and the Fairfax Funky Flea) and give 100% of the proceeds to the DC Child and Family Services Agency, which provides clothing and school essentials for DC kids in foster care. I also organize music concerts that generate clothing donations from attendees, with the clothes also going to DC Child and Family Services.
As ThriftKids grows, I will increase our fundraising through grants and other traditional non-profit channels to offer a broader spectrum of support services to DC teens aging out of foster care. Stay tuned!
